Artiste confirmé, Sean Paul a mené une longue route avant d'atteindre la notoriété qui est aujourd'hui la sienne. Né en 1973, il hérite d'un lourd patrimoine. Fils d'une célèbre peintre jamaïcaine, il est également le fruit de plusieurs racines puisqu'il est un mélange d'origines issues des continents africains, asiatiques, et européens. Dès l'adolescence, il découvre à l'école non pas une vocation pour les maths mais plutôt pour le sport. C'est toutefois dans ce domaine qu'il va dans un 1er temps essayer de faire son trou. Il représente la Jamaïque lors de compétitions internationales en water-polo, mais retourne à ses premières amours, la musique. Encouragé par les compliments de ses proches, il fait jouer ses relations et parvient peu à peu à se faire un nom dans le milieu. La 1ère preuve de son talent sort en 1996 sous la forme d'un single intitulé Baby Girl. Dès lors, la voie est ouverte pour d'autres titres tels que Hot Gal Today, Deport Them, Infiltrate, ou Excite Me. Son 1er [album Stage One sort quatre ans plus tard, en 2000. Dutty Rock sort en France en juin 2003.
